What is TMJ disorder?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the name for each joint (right and left) that connects your jaw to your skull. TMJ disorders are a family of problems related to your jaw joint and are primarily of a musculoskeletal origin. If you have had symptoms like pain or a “clicking” sound, you’ll be glad to know that these problems are more easily diagnosed and treated than they were in the past. In fact, it is a common disorder, with up to 90% of the population suffering from TMJ issues at some point in their lives. It is second only to back pain as a chronic pain condition. These symptoms occur when the joints of the jaw and the chewing muscles do not work together correctly. The graphic below highlights the anatomy of the joint and certain issues that arise causing pain. Since some types of TMJ problems can lead to more serious conditions, early detection and treatment are important.
No one treatment can resolve TMJ disorders completely and treatment takes time to become effective. Dr. Haleem can help you have a healthier, more comfortable jaw.
